PostSubject: Skype Interviewing   Fri Jan 20, 2012 2:26 pm

Skype (with Video) being used in Europe as a tool for interviewing job candidates.

First there is a phone interview. Second comes the Skype Video interview where candidate and interviewer can see each other. If that succeeds, the next step in a personal in-house interview. I think it is a great idea. It gives both candidate and employer a chance for screening and saves time and expense. What are your thoughts?

They wouldn't have to dress down for the occasion.

I don't think I like it. A Skype interview seems to give a lot video information about your home to someone who is nothing more than a perspective employer. Invasion of privacy, perhaps?

Change is good, on a lot of things, but sometimes what sounds great turns out to be not so good after all, when all things are considered.

Yes E Don I agree, an invasion of privacy it would be.
I have not yet ventured into the area of web cams for that very reason.
Video calls from family is one thing but from complete strangers is something else.

I'm with E Don on this one. Along with the privacy issue, there is the possibility of a violation of civil rights - equal opportunity laws.

Just me.

One can choose where the camera is set or pointed.
As for invasion of privacy, it is an invasion if it is not requested. If one wants a job, getting to talk to the recruiter is important. Skype provides an opportunity to at least talk and see the person. Facial expressions and body language on both sides are more important that just a voice on the phone.
If one really wants to talk to personnel, even suggesting a Skype call can advance your application.

My son is using it. He had two Skype interviews last week from the UK and one from Hanover, Germany. They all went well and he is at the moment enroute for a physical interview.

On one telephone call from a recruiter, I heard him suggest Skyping.
