PostSubject: Standing at the cross roads of publishing.   Tue Jul 05, 2011 2:55 pm

I have five books ready for final (professional) rewrite. As most members know I have held back from submitting my work to an agent. I do believe writers are in a transition period from standard publishing, to internet publishing. I do not believe pulp books will completely go away, I do believe book stores will go away…which they are.
In 5-10 years from today, the choice of Standard publishing, internet publishing would not be a question.
I believe seeing one of my books in the window of a major book store is vanity, which I have some of. The main reason I have always wanted a major pulp publisher…I would be able to gage how well I can, or can’t write.
I may go one of the many ways of publishing on the internet…if I do, I still want my work professionally checked. I do not like the quality of 90% of, ebooks, self published pulp, etc now on the net which are not ready for any kind of publication.
Perhaps in the near future, agents will come onto the scene from pulp publishers, and become internet, agent publishers.
I have a fear of losing control of one of my works to a major publisher, who would not go far with it…and I lose control of most rights. On the other side of the coin, a good book can get lost in the sea of trash books on the net.
I’m somewhat lost as to what to do…maybe I'll just go sailing, and say the hell with it.

I had a goal to publish a book. I published one with a vanity press by accident. The second was with a small press. I published eight or so short stories in anthologies. I'm glad for it all.

Your goals will dictate your decisions. Good luck. Sometimes just going sailing sounds good to me too.

You have five books, Domenic. Pay to have them professionally edited. Upload the books to Amazon Kindle. Upload one or two to Smashwords and make one of the books free. Ask Amazon to price match the free book. Choose the book that you think will hook readers into your style of writing. Price the other books low and market the books like a business.

If the books gain a readership, you will make money as well as gain a reputation among your readers. A New York publisher would expect to make money out of your books and so should you!

At Writer's Net this is getting a lot of discussion, and quite a few people are claiming to make a lot of money doing it.

I thank all of you for the for the input. You three have been around this thing for some time. Why don't one, or all three of you set up the first internet Literary Agency. I think it's a great idea. You guys could become the crest of a big wave.
