Are these out-of-print books and who owns the rights?

Ian Fleming:

Kingsley Amis:

David Lodge:

Joanna Trollope:

Apparently, Lulu made a deal with Ingram:

"This content is made available through a partnership with Ingram Book Company in full compliance with copyright law."

Look for your favourite author on Lulu.com -- all made possible because of "ego" authors who self-publish. scratch

Here's the Lulu blog explaining the deal:

Not sure what your point is. So some big-name authors are putting their backlists on Lulu -and? This isn't really "self publishing" as I understand it, but maybe I'm missing something.

This comment was funny:

"Oh and thatís wonderful that Emiril Lagasse is published on lulu, but he already has a fan base so he could sell a book on goober.com and be a best seller."

Why am I scatching my head? The long chain authors received bad press from the midlist authors for causing reduced sales and all but removing advances. Now, the top authors are using the very same technology to increase the sales of former bestsellers. Will the midlist authors treat the top authors with the same contempt? Is it okay to use POD publishing to increase the sales of 200,000 titles that already sold thousands of copies but not okay to sell a few copies by unknown authors? In a democracy, should it really matter if your book sells one copy or a million? To paraphrase George Orwell: All authors are equal but some authors are more equal than others?
