PostSubject: The book of Alan Villier   Mon Aug 03, 2009 7:40 pm

To-day I was chat with the chief –teacher of the
maritime school of Parnu, He was making up the life boat of the sunken Estonia
and said he will once circumnavigate the world with it. I said that idea sound good
and sea-boat of that size – there will be not problem if have lot of time to sit.
He gave a short chuckle then said that it was just a dream and he was well aware what that kind of venture ask.

I loan him from my bookshelf a book of Alan
Villier, ‘ Set the sails’, story of the Cap
Hoorn sailors and of the full rigged ships in those days.

He promised read it but with sad I was thinking
that his English might be too poor to get those stories in that book.

Your loan of the book indicated your desire to help. I think the person will value that.

Haloo.
Yes there is the film of Alan for everyone to see
http://hubpages.com/hub/The_Cape_Horn_Road_Part_1_Alan_Villiers_Film

It was made on Race Harvard (there could be
miss-spelling on the name for I don't remember) anyway it was made during the
voyage from Australia for England, for the order,' as they called it. The friend of Villier, the boys
name I don remember - had the idea make a film, an audients film from one of
the last ocean cargo carrying sailing ship. The smuggled the gears of the film
aboard the and sign on the ship's article as an able-seamen they didn't say anything
about the idea make a film of the voyage been afraid to be rejected for that.
There was accident when they were in the rigge lowering some sail or something,
the friend of Villier got hit some falling wire and he died and was buried into
sea off the Cap Horn.

The movie gives an even better feel for the reality of those ships than the pictures, Harry, though the color photo at the bottom of the page shows the beauty of it. I heard the speaker talking about the ship running before the wind. That would be the advantage of the square rigs, wouldn't it? We used a spinnaker on our little sloops when we were running, but most of the time, we were tacking, as I remember, working our way back and forth to get from one place to another. It's been forty years since I sailed. I've forgotten so much.

Dear Harry,
You have a nice face and a lovely motor home. I like the picture that had the flowers in the fore ground.

Thank you for explaining about the ships. I wonder if any persons today could do that kind of work.

How much pay did those men recieve for all that effort.

That movies shows the awesome power of wind. I imagine if people set up wind stations out at sea, the electricity that would be generated would be enough to power the earth. It would take one hell of a big battery.

Love,
Betty
