| Interesting post on the Bad Editor's blog. I would have left a comment, but the system doesn't allow open ID.
I see little distinction between an iUniverse style publication and a Lulu publication other than the costs. At iUniverse, one simply buys more services, mainly the proper format and layout of the book. Many books from Lulu don't meet standards simply because the writers aren't layout specialists and don't know, for example, what the order of front matter is supposed to be or that new chapters always begin on an odd-numbered page.
So, I would take issue with the contention that iUniverse is vanity and Lulu is not. I did like your point, though, that the figures are misleading. Looking at the numbers alone, one gets the idea that self-published authors are "gaining" on mainstream published authors and nothing could be farther than the truth.

| Well, it could be said, I guess, that ALL publishing is "vanity". (Or even that ALL is vanity. Book of Ecclesiastes 1:2)
But "vanity press" tends to imply a bit more than "publishing a book on your own".
Lulu charges for nothing more than producing a book. There isn't really any way to get a book out with out paying to print it, so...
There is a huge difference between the two business models. |

It seems to be generally accepted that Chris Turkel and cdemu are one and the same person. cdemu introduced himself as Charles:
"My name is Charles and I am a new author. My space opera will be published by Baen Books in about 18 months. Hopefully in six months I'll show up on their web page and their production schedule. Right now, my editor and I exchanging edits, drafts and rewrites.
I survived the slush pile and I'd be happy to answer any questions y'all may have."
He received a very warm welcome:

Since you are happy to answer any questions, I have a couple. Where's this book, then? Which web pages is it showing up on?
(Only answers from cdemu, thank you.) _________________ Shelagh Watkins http://shelaghwatkins.co.uk/

| There are no shortage of idiots posting here or anywhere else on the Internet. Without pointing any fingers, here we have more than our share, of which I am undoubtedly one.
Marie isn't. Perhaps some of you don't like her, I doubt that she cares. But I've read some of her material, just as I've read some of the others here, and I'll put hers on the line beside anybodies here. |

| No finger pointing, Don. Just facts. cdemu, kdu and TheDoctor all posted from the same IP address. TheDoctor registered on the forum with zizban's email address (which he made public himself when he joined another forum). Another fact, the guest poster, who alerted the forum to the blog, posted from the same IP address as "TinyTim" -- who did point the finger at Chris Turkel: "I think it's zizban aka cturkel, so they have been a member here and lied. I mean, look at his posts. He mentions John Scalzi on "Why new novelists are kinda old" and the site mentions John Scalzi on the site disclaimer (Site Disclaimer and Comment Policy (Tip of the hat to John Scalzi for this). If you look at the language, the same attitude and superiority he writes with, he is smug and feels better than everyone here. I guess he keeps saying he isn't a member here because he knows he'll be found out soon enough. He has not had anything big published so he has to mock and make fun of others, it's his only way to keep people reading his stuff. WTG Cturkel! You've been outed!" http://www.publishedauthors.org/chatter-box-f3/something-about-you-guys-t4276-30.htmThe spammer, who posted the quotes about me taken from Wikipedia, also posted from the same IP address as the guest and TinyTim. As for Marie, I have been a member of Live Journal since 2008 (I joined so that I could send a pm to a member to ask about who owned the copyright of the photo I used on the cover of Forever Friends). I sent a message to Live Journal three days (March 24th) ago asking for the article about Marie to be removed because she had been falsely accused. This is the email confirmation: Your LiveJournal.com support request regarding "False accusation in badeditor" has been filed and will be answered as soon as possible. Your request tracking number is 1071409. You can track your request's progress or add information here: http://www.livejournal.com/support/see_request.bml?id=1071409&auth=fesc The link is to a private message that I sent to Live Journal support and is not visible to the public. If Marie would like to see the contents of the message I sent, she has my email address and I will forward the message to her. I doubt that Live Journal will do anything. I have information that proves that Marie was falsely accused and I wanted to lodge that information with the website owners. _________________ Shelagh Watkins http://shelaghwatkins.co.uk/

| What was Marie falsley accused of, and by whom? Is cturkel the blogger? So the person who alerted the forum to the blog isn't cturkel? The plot thickens... |

| It is of course, much more shameful to snoop around about somebody's lies than to tell the lies in the first place. |

Tell us your secrets, like how you were banned from several writers forums because you were engaging in personal attacks. Michy? Remember her?
Or the fact there are two warrants for your arrest in Mexico.
Or you are a felon with multiple convictions in california.
ya, your mister honest. |

| Well, damn, another idiot has managed to make another idiotic post, and of course, he or she has done it without providing their name or any of their credentials. Maybe this one should change their screen name from "Hort" to "Snort" because it seems as if some of that has been going on. Will this forum ever reach the point that they won't let people post until they furnish some provable background on themselves? |
