Why Did You Hate Me Mother
A. W. Nutter
As darkness approached so did my fear
Knowing your presence was drawing near
Love from you is something I did not expect
Pain in my life I was forced to accept
Why did you hate me Mother
Why was I given to another
I did as you instructed I told the proper lies
The nightly beatings, were easily disguised
Why did you allow them to take me away
By your side is where I wanted to stay
Why did you hate me Mother
Why was I given to another
Gradually being taught I was not to be blamed
It was you that should have felt ashamed
For the first time in my life I discovered love
From an angel of a woman sent from God above
I want to thank you Mother
For allowing me to remain with another
Standing beside your grave with my hands interlaced
I wonder why I long too see your face
An only son you tormented and despised
Yet I stood beside your grave and cried
