I recently paid a visit to London and York (my home town), after living in Arizona for the past fifteen years. While agreeing that, in the past, British food was not what could be called haute cuisine, things have changed dramatically.
We ate in places ranging from Simpsons in the Strand (excellent roast beef and Yorkshire pudding) to eating pub grub, and not once did we have a bad meal. Imaginative menus, food served fresh and piping hot - excellent.
As to British TV, we exiles have to watch either PBS, or BBC America. The latter seems to have picked all the dross from the Broken Biscuit Company, and unloaded it over here. Ramsay - repeated ad nauseam - so much so that we know the dialog by heart. Interminable Doctor Who repeats, and very bad "comedy" shows (who thinks Catherine Tate is funny?).
Me? I'm hoping to sell my house in Scottsdale and move back to Yorkshire as soon as possible. England may be in terminal decline, but at least it's my home. You can take me out of Yorkshire, but you can't take Yorkshire out of me.
