Pam, Maggie, wow! Edmonton in the far north with very cold winters, and a member of the military band. I suppose you beat your own drums as you progressed. The book sounds like the story of your life. Will be an interesting read.

You guys rock - thanks for the congratulations. The book is a little autobiographical in some respects, and the settings are certainly real. For any of you that want to have a listen, there is a brief spot of me reading from the book on the website at www.maggiebendar.com.

Here are some of the thoughts that I shared with Shelagh on learning I was featured...

I thought the forum would be a great place to hang out and meet people who have done what I want to do. At the time I was actively searching for ways to keep me interested in writing, not just as a process but also as a way to make a reasonable living, so meeting other people who are writing has been very important. As a self-published author I have also felt at times a little second class; as though trying to make a statement without a publisher backing me was like trying to sneak into the back door of the writer’s mysterious world.

Since joining the published authors’ forum one side benefit for me has been that I have not just found my energy around writing increasing, but I have met some really interesting people. As I got into it I have had to tell myself more than once to back off a bit, because like anything, the posts feed one another and I can spend WAY too much time on pursuits other than actually doing my work, but I have really enjoyed the fact that the amount of overall writing that I am doing has increased enormously.

An example of the spin off is this: as you know I do a lot of technical writing (it pays the bills) and so I have also been using that work to support my quest for credibility, and some really neat stuff has
resulted. I received the recognition as a professional writer that I posted
about a week or so ago, and now have been asked (out of the blue) to get
involved in some really cool projects. One is to co-write a book on training,
and the other is an even bigger one with internationally renowned group of writers working on a project together.

One of the reasons that I wrote the novel under Maggie Bendar was to separate my fiction work from my non-fiction work, but there was another concern for me in that because there are other Pam Robertson’s out there that do pretty well in Google, and I didn’t want to be confused with them. One of the great things about Maggie is there is just one, and so she ranks high on Google really easily. Then, just this morning, Chapters/Indigo, which is Canada’s version of Amazon, has listed me on their site as an author. If you Google Pam Robertson right now, I actually show up at the top of the list on the Chapter’s profile. I will have to make sure I really work on the content of that page!

Today I actually feel like an author. You’d think the Ph.D. would have done it for me, but, nope. Recognition from you on the forum, the interaction with interesting people, and actually gaining steam within the industry have all made me feel credible as an author.

Life is good.
