I for one am fed up with the campaign for President and all the crap the candidates have been feeding us. I think what it will boil down to is voting for the “less worse” candidate.
The Democrats seem to be on a course of self-destruct. When you throw dirt you lose ground – and they are both guilty of that. The lone Republican will most likely be signing his own death warrant if he succeeds in becoming President. The pressures of the job at his age is a serious health factor. In any event, his mental faculties have already been diminished and that will increase with age. His VP running mate should get much scrutiny since that person could very well be the President one is voting for.

How about Obama's chances of living out his term.

Chris Rock did a great standup bit (back when he was brilliant and edgy) about how having a black vice president.

It was like, "If the VP was black, I couldn't WAIT to kill the president. What's the worst that could happen: they put me in jail with a bunch of brothers who treat me like a hero for the rest of my life?"

Well that one cuts both ways. Fear of that what caused Colin Powell's wife to dissuade him for running. Which sucked because he's one of few people who've been considered for candidate who are worth a damn.

If Jack Kemp can't be a front-runner but Huckabee and Romney can, we ought to junk the system and just hire a president from Central Casting.

How does Robert Redford sound?

All the candidates are actors. Some do a better job of it than others. We have had very few genuine people running, and also few who have held the office of president.
For the most part, if they are good at delivering speeches written by others, they take all the bows. You find out how good or bad a person is when they have to talk extemporaneously.

Not only that, but the president is only as strong or wise as his/her advisors. I am appalled that there are those who would vote for gender or color rather than qualifications. We as a country are getting into really deep doo-doo, and it will take a strong leader to pull us out.

Well, I only just finished some research and found out the roots of the Democratic and Republican parties and what they are supposed to mean, so now I am REALLYconfused where I thought that by now would finally have it figured out! I do not envy my American friends one bit in this election; I mean if a single party cannot figure out who should lead it, then how are people supposed to figure it all out when it actually comes down to the election itself?? It reminds me a little of American Idol or some other reality show rather than reality itself.
Shocked

You hit it on the head, Pam. Our election campaigns are basically a mud slinging contest! It's a shame, because you know there are people who could do a wonderful job, but it seems that big business and the 'good old boys club' determine who will get to campaign.

By 'good old boys club' I am referring to party heads, of course. They are the ones with clout.

I was going to suggest that we just offer them all boxing gloves and let them duke it out...but then I thought this might be more effective...

Pam, offering them boxing gloves and letting them duke it out is a great idea but something tells me they'd all get LOST on the way to the ring!! Duh...... it's very discouraging to think that one of these folks will be President.......very.

A rather good point, Zada. Unfortunately, I think we're way past deep and about to move into the "way over our heads" stage.

There was a saying that floated around Europe in the earlier part of the decade. It went something like, "You Americans got the president you deserved." The idea was that since "we" voted for the winner of the contest, "we" had to live with the results of our decision. Unfortunately, the truth is that the past two presidential races were decided by less than five percent margin. That means nearly half of the voters were in opposition to the winning candidate. Worse is the fact that even with the relatively high voter turn out, fewer than 25 percent of eligable voters participated in the election. Given that, the fate of the nation was determined by approximately 10 percent of the electorate.

Do not misunderstand. I have no solution to offer in this situation. I do, however, believe that there is nothing so out of the ordinary about having more than one obvious front runner by the time of a parties national convention. After all, the purpose of the convention is supposed to be to determine who will be the candidate for that party. For reasons I do not understand, it has become expected that some front-runner or other will emerge before that time and the conventions only purpose is then to simply crown that person with the privilage of running in the general election. Let us not forget that in the 2000 Republican primaries there was much mud thrown and spiteful words spewed from all of the candidates. It was not enough to tear the party apart and they enjoyed a November victory against their Democratic counterpart.

There have been elections in the past where I found no candidate on either side whom I liked. In those situations I found it necessary to determine who I believed would be least detrimental to the country. The problem I have with this election season is that I'm having a difficult time determine who is the lesser of the three evils. Again, don't misunderstand. Each candidate brings something different to the table. However, each also brings baggage that I'll have to sort through and decide, come November, who will be least likely to bring further harm to the country, our rights, and our safety.

I think it will be a long, hard winter.

Be well,

William,
when one considers that the majority vote doesn't elect someone, then it is time to make some changes. (Al Gore won the popular vote but lost the election.)
We need a third party. We need a fair system of voting where the people decide. Strange that we try to monitor fair elections in other countries and fail that test at home.

I could not agree with you more Abe. It seems the parties have done everything they can to block a third party and any independents. Successfully, too. In this state, they have gone to a point where the 'top two' move on to the election, even if they are the same party! How is that for offering a choice? Last election, you had to declare yourself either dem or gop, and that was just to be allowed to vote!! Otherwise you could only vote nonpartisan.

I believe it is time to revamp the whole system. But how?

Zada,
that's a good question.
A simplistic way would be for anyone with a social security number and proper ID to be able to vote. Why all this registration nonsense? And there should be three parties.
Sometimes I think registration and declaring a party affiliation has more to do with speculation than anything else. The pollsters start with the numbers and that begins to influence votes.
There is too much speculation and too much money spent for a fair election. It boils down to who spends the most to brainwash the most. Crap!

Declaring a party in the last election meant you could only vote for candidates of that party. No going across party lines, which I regularly do as an independent. So do many party members.

I have never held the opinion that just one party held the best answers, so I felt very cheated. You also had your choices limited to just two parties, and the independent candidates were eliminated. It seemed to be a ploy by the two parties to 'keep the voters in line'.

Abe practically swore - now I know he's really mad. We have issues here with the election side, but I do think it's really bizarre that the democratic powerhouse of the world is actually a two party state that has not got a democratic electoral system. It's weird. Practically makes me want to live in another country...oh yeah, I do. We have several parties but it's a weird system here too. You guys can come visit and do your lobbying from here it you like, and I'll heat up the barbecue.
Just don't ask me to hypothetically vote as if I was living in the US, because I have a really hard time sorting it out, and I consider myself someone that has a reasonable handle on what's happening in the world... confused
