Ah, Shelagh. Obviously you recognized the Dish's ethnicity as East Indian through your visual recognition and experience with the races, and you recognized the Stunning Blonde as probably caucasion by the same senses, thereby backing my assertion that only the blind or the inexperienced can't tell the difference between the people of the world.

My baby sister was filling out some paperwork when she was in high school. She had to check the section for race. She checked the box that said African American.

She handed it to the lady in the office who looked it over and then handed it back to my sister and said "Honey, you checked the wrong box here."

My sister looked and said "No. That is right. I'm black."

The lady looked at my sister and said "No you aren't."

My sister looked the lady in the eye and said "Yes. I. Am."

Those forms almost always say "pick one" for race and when they do, my sister (as do I) usually goes with her paternal race. Her father is African American (mine is Mexican). Our mother is white.

But my sister has light skin, blonde hair, and blue eyes. Most people think she is white. Many people of color recognize she is mixed. (She's here with her hubby)

My brother and his wife are both anesthesiologists. They are both Dr. Navarro. (Good thing they work at different hospitals ... as it is it gets confusing.)

My sister in law, who is African American, and very active in her community (http://pub.ucsf.edu/today/news.php?news_id=200708031 ) was contacted by an area hispanic group who wanted her to speak to their group about being a succesful Latina woman. My sister in law, had to chuckle and tell the lady contacting her that she would be happy to speak as a 'successful' minority woman, but that she wasn't actually hispanic, but married to a hispanic man.

I just love the diversity of my family!

JoElle, that is amusing! Diversity is right! Most of my family tree stretches back to the 1600's on this continent, so it would not surprise me at all to find I am a little of everything!! (some of my family was here to meet my immigrant family members!)
