| In many instances here, grandparents watch the grandchildren so their parents can work, and sometimes they work more than one job already. Frequently the Father of the children is working two jobs and the Mom is working one or one and a half jobs. The childrenare basically being raised by their grandparents. In fact, they are often housed in one dwelling to save on rent! _________________ Zada Connaway Mother's Journals: parts 1, 2 and 3 ISBN # 1-4241-6969-0

| | And the latest statistics say that pesants in the middle ages had more vacation time than Americans do today. I think the average American has about two weeks of vacation a year, but I hear they get much more in European countries (something like six weeks a year). Just a few decades ago, an American family could support itself with a single full-time income, but now it is common for husband and wife to both work full time jobs and sometimes one or both of them is working two full time jobs. We have technology that's suppose to make our lives easier, yet Americans are working more hours now than they did only a few decades ago. Part of it has to do with the rising cost of living, but I think a lot of it has to do with the ever increasing wants of Americans. People seem to have a lot more and want a lot more today than they did in the past. It seems that no matter how many things people have they always want more; it's like trying to fill up a bottomless pit. |

| Having a job and having a fair wage are two different things. It's no wonder many people require more than one job to support themselves. Either they are in over their heads with too much debt, or they just have a job with sub-standard pay. And often those jobs with sub-standard pay don't even provide benefits like healthcare or a pension fund. In times when jobs are hard to find is when people will take anything they can get. Many employers take advantage of that situation to pay as little as possible. Funny how I remember slogans of the past like: "people are our most important asset." So what happened? Profit for the shareholders have overtaken those people assets. _________________ "To Beirut and Back" http://www.freewebs.com/abemarch |
