Dear Abe,
Too much success can be stressful too!

As of May 8th, I have been awarded Honorary Membership of Bangladesh Astronomical Society:-

What that means (amongst other things) is I'd best deliver some ground-breaking new initiatives and start to impress the hell out of the Society's Board and Constitution! Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

May your 'radius' expand to ever greater horizons, way to go Dude!

Rainbow,
I appreciate the compliments Smile
But you know such honors are only given to people when they been dead for like... 2,000 years! Look at Aristarchus of Samos:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aristarchus_of_Samos

We only start to appreciate his genius now after he's been debtaing his discoveries from the hereafter lol!

Anyone here remember the story of Tycho Brahe and Johannes Kepler (16th century-ish)? Tycho was the greatest visual astronomer of his time and had piled up a lifetime's worth of planetary observations that he'd painstakingly recorded and kept in his chest of treasures.

Eventually, when Tycho grew ill from over indulging in food, wine and women in his late age, Kepler was waiting (like a vulture? who knows) to take his work and formulate his famous theories of planetary motion.

As he was dying in his death bed, Tycho kept repeating to himself: "Let me not seem to have lived in vain. Let me not seem to have lived in vain". And, he did not. For history did not forget his contributions and whenever Kepler's three laws of planetary motion are mentioned somewhere these days, people always remember they would never have been possible without Tycho's observations.

Just a weird thought I had today flower

The same story has it that Kepler's mother was rounded up at night and taken to the stake to be burnt on allegations of "witchcraft".

People like Kepler, along with the stories of war, mass-chaos and confusion that prevailed during his time, are a reminder of the crucially important role that science and mathematics played to bring us out of the Dark Ages. It took quite a few brave thinkers of that age to see through the 'fluff' and spot the distant glow of light at the far end of a very long tunnel...

I guess the same could be said in many ways about the present state of our world today. Where fanaticism previals over common sense. Where kids will show their parents the finger once they hit the age of 16 and runaway into the night with their new found freedoms. Where man doesn't need woman, and woman doesn't need man anymore. Where young people have no respect for their elders... (I never thought I had it in me to be such a preacher!!! lol! )

Ahad, you're not preaching but simply expressing the state of the world today.
So much has happened in my lifetime that it is mind-boggling. From my childhood of horse and buggy to walking on the moon.
From respect of authority to disrespect of authority. From men being men and women, women to women's lib and same-sex marriages.
To grow, to progress, means change. In my view, not all change is good. Too much high-tech means less human interaction. I guess I'm a bit old fashioned but I like the slower pace of life. Everyone seems to be in a race to go somewhere and many have no clue where it is they are going. In the process we are destroying our planet. The way of life for humans is changing and in the not too distant future people may be living in a space capsul just to survive. Science will be needed to help sustain life in this new world.
My preference is the world of my youth. I suppose each generation says that because it is what they are accustomed to.
See what you did, Ahad? You got me preaching.

Preaching? Sheesh, I thought you were both just expressing observations and opinions. Nothing 'preachy' about that, in my view! Shocked

Sounds a little more like philosophizing (except that I have no idead how to spell it...) and the thoughts of pholosophers carry through the ages and speak through change because they make people think. Nothing wrong with that.

Very Happy

All of life is based on philosophies and ideologies, from people who follow the daily horoscopes and go to work in the offices every morning to those that roam aimlessly on foot high up in the Andes Cool

What I find interesting is that in midst of all these ideologies, some practices eventually fall out of favor, while others seem to flourish. People came to their senses in the end that those who practice witchcraft aren't necessarily such an evil lot after all, and maybe we should just leave them in peace and not burn them on the stake.

'Destruction of the planet' (Abe) is largely to to do with overpopulation. The inevitability is there that we'd have to look for living space and resources beyond Earth in the long term. Latest I heard is that the oceans are now becoming unbearably polluted with plastic bags. There is marine life dying off the coast of Polynesian Islands in the Pacific, soffocating from swallowing bits of plastic bags that originally served fast foods to people in Europe and N. America.
As in the example of witchcraft and burning I quoted above, I suspect people will eventually let colonization of outer space become a higher priority and allow that practice to flourish. Wink

Talking of which, if anyone here would like to hitch a FREE ride to the Moon, there's a great offer to send your name on a CD:
