| My pet peeve...my dad has been a commercial muter since just about the time they came out with hand held remotes. Trouble is that he'll mute commercials and then fall asleep with a death grip on the darned thing... Good thing he doesn't snore when he's sitting up! _________________ Pam Robertson http://andthebandplayedonmylawn.blogspot.com |

| I had two years of high school Spanish. I only remember the very basics and a long sentence that I learned on Leave It To Beaver, where Wally taught The Beave what to say. I won't repeat it here. I usually can understand what is being said. I just can't say it back.
:topic:If I lived where they speak Spanish, Russian, etc. (the keyword here is live) I feel I should know the language so there wouldn't have to be a separate dial to push. I feel that way about America too. It's okay to know other languages and speak them, but when in Rome do as the Romans do. Maybe this isn't so much off the topic anyway as it is a pet peeve of mine. _________________ http://www.weavingdreamspublishing.com http://suesunshine.blogspot.com/ http://suesunshine.wordpress.com/ |

I took French one year in junior high and two years of French in high school ... I only claim fluency in English and Spanish (I attended school in Guadalajara for six years).
As a child in Mexico, we had English classes in school from first grade until we graduated. You will find that most educated Mexicans are fluent in English. Americans almost never have trouble finding an English speaker while visiting Guadalajara.
Picking a language button doesn't bother me. However, NOT GETTING A HUMAN in any language ... and being told my call is appreciated a gazillion times while I am on hold for 20 minutes DOES bother me. |

| Canada has two official languages so lots of times you will call and be given the choice of English or French, which I think is a good thing. The only thing that drives me batty is getting lost in voice mail jail or button pushing. I LOVE that so many companies here are going old fashioned (what a weird thought that is!?!) and having people answer their phones.

| Pam, To it that is fine since they are two "official" languages of the country. I am not so sure that there is more than one here in the USA. Perhaps there was a bill passed when I wasn't looking. They do that you know. *grin*
I'm not saying people shouldn't speak other languages here. I am just saying that when it comes to business or something official it should be done in the language of the country. _________________ http://www.weavingdreamspublishing.com http://suesunshine.blogspot.com/ http://suesunshine.wordpress.com/ |

| Those who come here and speak Spanish need to also speak English for very practical reasons like jobs, school, etc. The children often do better than their parents.
It is amazing when one goes to another country and people can speak five or six languages. I am always impressed by those people and feel very inadequate, and do speak some German but am always very shy about doing so, which is not a good thing. Sometimes I have had to, however.

| My Pet Peeves: -pesky salespeople -getting credit card offers I never asked for -junk mail and spam -products with instructions in foreign languages, but no English instructions -easy to assemble stuff that's not actually easy to assemble -people who want to tell me what to think -crappy products -cameras that are perpetually out of focus -people talking on cell phones while driving (which is dangerous) -and my biggest pet peeve of all, judgemental bigoted narrow minded right wing religious fundamentalists |

| When American tourists visit Europe, they expect everyone to speak English. When European tourists visit America, the tourist is expected to speak English. I think that anyone who has never tried to learn a second language has missed out on much. Simply trying to speak another language elicits much help and respect.
As for pet peeves, I think Gordon listed most of mine. My biggest pet peeve is too sensitive to list. _________________ "To Beirut and Back" http://www.freewebs.com/abemarch "With every adversity there is a benefit." |

| Abe is so right. I am so afraid of speaking German incorrectly that I don't try when I should.
Back in 1990, I did use German as a second language for a couple we stayed with in Prague just after the Iron Curtain came down and the city emerged into a truly joyful place. It was a second language for them also since they did not know English and we didn't know Czech.
As we left the apartment of our hosts, and tried to communicate our gratitude in German, they showed us a large poster of Havel, the man whom they credited with bringing freedom to Czechoslovakia. As they showed us the poster, they said in German, "Er mach uns glucklich." We knew they said, "He made us happy."
Abe helped my memory here and I think I have that copied almost right. It was a precious statement in another language about freedom, forever in my soul.
Love, Carol |
