Betty, I thik you are quite innovative in your approach, and you are sure to do well. Maybe you could join forces with Hydro Harvest and share marketing ideas.

I have heard that the 'baby' or 'finger' carrots you buy are really big ugly ones that are shaved until they reach a certain size. They are then dipped in a solution that turns them white after they sit out for any length of time.

I don't know how true that is, but I think that some folks have quit buying them for that reason. If you marketed them intact, with tops and skins still attached, you might have a real going concern.

Dear Shelagh,
I imagine that I am in your father's generation. Things were so hard in his youth and in mine. I suppose that gave him and I grit. What that really means is that the labor is to do your self, not to wait for someone else to do it or wait until you can pay someone else to do it. I find no disgrace in labor.

I have a picture in my mind of the glass greenhouses you describe. I can see the green algae growing on them on the shady side. Smile You know, your father was a pioneer to put those glass houses up in the climate that you live in England. What a brave and hopeful man! I hope that he has enjoyed his adventure.

I do love to see the unfolding of of new life, plant or animal.
When I think about these small, small changes that I see every day, the evidence that life is never ending generation to generation, I could almost get religion!

You are a beautiful person.

Love,
Betty

Hi Betty,

The climate is good in the summer, but it is a short season. More lettuce and tomatoes are grown in Lancashire than any other county in England.

In recent years, this packing plant in West Lancs has more than doubled in size and become a 24-hour, 364-day-a-year operation, and one of the largest and most successful root producers in the UK with over 300 staff:

The transport division has a fleet of 28 wagons, 20 refrigerated trailers, 35 tippers, & 2 low loaders.

Not all growers in the north-west are successful and many small concerns have been forced out of business but the bigger producers have survived and continue to grow a substantial amount of the national agricultural produce.

My father is the same age as Dick and is enjoying his retirement and still playing bowls!

This is the satellite view of the house my father and brother built. The lower greenhouses are the ones they moved twice:

It's small compared to some of the growers in the area:
