| Yet another blog: This is not a complaint because for a guy about to celebrate (?) his 83rd birthday I am doing quite well. It's a rare day when I don't work six or eight hours and that includes weekends. But that's sitting at a computer writing or doing the things that go along with it. I'll be feeling great when I decide to get up and do something else. Anything at all, you name it - a 25-mile hike with full-field pack, carry the ball a few times for the Cleveland Browns, take over at shortstop for the Chicago Cubs. Ah, yes. Then after twenty steps down the hall I'm reaching out for support. Can I make it to the recliner in the living room? Maybe, but it won't be easy. My step may be sprightly as I set out to empty the trash in the chute fifteen yards down the outer hallway. On the way back I'm clutching at the wall to help me stay on my feet and wondering how our door moved so far away in such short a time. It's called anemia. The slightest effort enables it to drain the energy from your body and leave you with all the strength of a limp dish rag. I guess there are numerous ways to become anemic but I've never paid much attention to medical stuff. In my case I think it's from a benign tumor on the pituitary gland that has knocked every hormone there is down to base level. I take pills and get a monthly shot to build me up and the anemia just laughs at both. So my advice is this: don't get it. Just downright refuse to allow it anywhere near you. If you find out how to do that, please let me know. It's almost lunch time, I've been up about five hours, have gotten quite a bit accomplished and am feeling great. So tennis, anyone? Maybe I'd better think about that a little more. If I can make it down the hall when Jackie says the food is on the table, I'll give it further consideration. In a pig's eye.

| Without a sense of humor you would be a sorry case. I can just imagine how you must keep Jackie in stitches. Seeing humor in everything certainly is a healthy outlook. Now if we can just find a way to help you with that Anemia. _________________ "To Beirut and Back" http://www.freewebs.com/abemarch |

| Just being able to work at what you love is a great source of renewing strength. If I don't write everyday, I feel like I've failed life somehow. Even worse, failed the Muse. And a sense of humor. Glad to see you're enjoying both work and the play of humor. But hopefully someone will figure out the anemia cure soon, like yesterday. _________________ "Once upon a time in the Land of LA, a nice enough journalist kind of guy was minding his own store when this jester appeared, ambushed him with the bauble of Art and transported him wicky-wacky to the underbelly of human passion and vice." | Dick you have a great gift for taking something lousy and making it funny to the rest of us - thanks for sharing, and for also demonstrating how attitude has such a big influence on how we look at every day. My Mom would say eat more liver and spinach. All I can think to say is thanks again for the imagery you provide, and may you be blessed with many iron rich red blood cells.

| Dear Dick, You need that little motor scooter thing called a hover-round. Medicare pays for that. I have seen people driving one of those things down major highways and going to the movies. They have their oxygen tanks strapped on back. hahahah. Check it out. I will do that in a heart beat when I need to. I hope you do. I think it is the answer. You know, Dick, breathing is the whole answer to living a long time. Well, that and keeping your heart beating and having a creative mind, and a gentle spirit. You have it all. My dear, dear friend. Check out the little scooter. It is what you need. My best love to you. Betty _________________ www.woofferbook.com |

| Don't forget the liver and onions! They do have iron tablets, too. _________________ Zada Connaway Mother's Journals: parts 1, 2 and 3 ISBN # 1-4241-6969-0

| Dear Zada, Once, many years ago, I had an attack of the appendex. It was a long ordeal with drainage tubes, and prehistoric treatments. After a week of not eating, the first meal brought to me in the hospital was Liver (flacid and oozing) with lumps of white stuff. No bacon, on onions, NO Jello! What a disappointment! I could not have eaten anything good, but a flacid liver was so bad! I drank the orange juice. I suggest that if anyone wants the benefits of liver, take a pill, eat fried onions and wash it all down with jello shooters. Dick, get the scooter! It is better than liver. Love, betty _________________ www.woofferbook.com |

| Betty, you make me laugh! My mother's liver always came out that way. But my gram knew how to cook it. I love it today, but my mate doesn't, so I only get to cook it when he is away. I had anemia in my mid 20's (not unusual in pregnant women), so the dr. prescribed liver at least twice a week, and iron tablets four times a day! I got over it quickly, but I presume that if our beloved Sir Dick has a tumor, that prescription may not be a good idea, at all. _________________ Zada Connaway Mother's Journals: parts 1, 2 and 3 ISBN # 1-4241-6969-0

| How can anyone not like liver? I like pork, beef and chicken - but each cooked differently.
When I worked at my dad's store when I was young, we had an old black woman that came in once a week or so and ordered two pounds of pork liver. Each time, just before I wrapped it, she would ask for one of the slices. I would stab a slice with the icepick and she would take it, tilt her head back, and eat it like spaghetti - except the "sauce" was dripping blood.
Now I eat raw oysters and suchi, but I couldn't bring myself to try that raw liver. I am such a wimp... _________________ Brew My website:http://www.philwhitley.com "Let us dare to read, think, speak and write." ~ John Adams, 1765 |

| You think you are a wimp? I don't eat anything but vegetables raw! I love seafood, but I want it cooked, never mind organ meats. _________________ Zada Connaway Mother's Journals: parts 1, 2 and 3 ISBN # 1-4241-6969-0

| Had I been crawling on the desert for weeks without eating and came to someone who offered me perfectly cooked liver, I would just keep on crawling. After reading Brew's post I intend to skip dinner tonight. Betty, I don't need one of those scooters because the VA gave me a rollator that makes walking easy. It has great brakes and a comfortable seat when you get tired. The doctor thought I'd do more walking with the rollator. She was wrong, I don't. _________________ Mystery Writers of America, Private Eye Writers of America www.dickstodghill.com |

| Dick, your post is just great. I have to agree about passing up the liver in a desert. I'd do the same.
Like Zada, raw vegetables are more my liking.

| Maybe a raw carrot dangled in front of you? Only kidding. But what if you gave yourself a 'reward' for walking? A special treat, perhaps? _________________ Zada Connaway Mother's Journals: parts 1, 2 and 3 ISBN # 1-4241-6969-0
