Don't mean to hijack your review thread, Malcolm, but I loved your take on Captain Sully's Book Contract. You say exactly how some of us feel, those of us who spent time honing the craft of writing, who labor over our work, and how it makes us feel when someone, even a hero, suddenly has everything in the publishing world handed to them.

I don't begrudge Captain Sully his reward. He did a marvelous thing because of his skill and experience, and he made a decision based on that experience. That decision saved countless lives and he's to be applauded. Yet I couldn't help but feel a bit of jaw clinching when I learned of his book contract and magical entry into the publishing world. Then, of course, I felt guilty because of my reaction.

But perhaps I shouldn't feel too bad. He might feel the same way if I were suddenly allowed to pilot a jet airliner without any training or background. And yes, I realize trying to pilot an aircraft without experience, or serving as a trial attorney without a legal backgound ,is entirely different from writing a book, but to me, the principle is the same.

Abe's book, in addition to being a good novel, also provides food for thought about the issues and about what one's response might be if the kind of events he describes were to happen. I had similar feelings about "A Spark of Heavenly Fire" by Pat Bertram, a novel about a deadly virus raging through Colorado, causing a quarantine and martial law. Could it happen? If so, is the response by the authorities in the book likely to be the response we'd see in real life, and is it reasonable?

Advances like Sully's are, in my view, one of the things wrong with the industry. His is harder to complain about because his actions were so heroic as opposed to those with a shallow celebrity status.

First of all, I think Captain Sully will have a great deal of help with editors close at hand. But perhaps he is a good writer besides being a good pilot.

On the other side of the coin, having an airline pilot husband and son, this story has been discussed wherever we have gone. I believe my husband and son could have also landed that plane on the river. My husband says going for the river was the thing to do. I know there is a little part of him who wishes as you do about the book, Brenda, that he could have been the hero Captain Sully is. People have asked him about emergencies he had as an airline captain, and the one he relates has nothing to do with flying the plane.

My husband admires Captain Sully, and although he has never met him, knows part of what he is feeling and thinking, that he was just doing his job. We have watched everything about this man and the co-pilot, and I know the book will appear on our bookshelves along with those of other famous pilots.

The world needed a good news story that day.
