THE SPUR. Why are you writing a novel? Fame, money, fulfillment, an incomprehensible drive? My story of writing…starting with poetry in college, next short stories, then the long trek across the desert with the occasional oasis of achievement and satisfaction in writing novels. I am in it for fulfillment propelled by an incomprehensible drive, because I am certainly not making any money or achieving fame.

Keep doing it your way. Remember, too, that John Creasey had 100 novels rejected before making his first sale. He went on to sell more than 600.

Thanks for responding the way you did Dick. Your reference to John Creasey prompted me to Google him. There's a BBC story that said he wrote more books than anyone alive or dead under 10 different names. I had never heard of Creasey, but now intend to read him.

I think that for myself, many years of wanting to write finally piled up on me. The stories are there, but i need to let them out so they will leave me in peace! It is extrememly gratifying to me just to have my writing read and enjoyed. I get emails, phone calls, letters, even hasty notes jotted on little note pads that tell me it is being enjoyed. I may never get rich, but I have a deep sense of accomplishment.

Well, that isn't entirely true. I mean, really, I can't dance, sing, or play an instrument. That much IS true.

But even if I could, I would still write.

Like
a lot of other writers, I wrote stories and poems in grade school. Did
well in English class. Took journalism in high school and won all sorts
of awards for that ... and then put "the dream" on hold because of
marriage, job, and being a parent.

But, and I think most of
you will understand this feeling, writing was a part of me. And it was
always 'there'. That nagging feeling that I wasn't doing everything I
was supposed to be doing with my life. Because I knew I was meant to be
a writer and I knew I was not doing what I was meant to do.

When
my son was about 14 and began working on achieving his own dream of
being a firefighter, I realized I had not done anything to reach my own
dream.

And I knew it wasn't too late.

My son achieved his dream of being a firefighter when he turned 18.

About a year later I completed my first novel. I've since written four more and have two more I am working on.

And I feel a completeness, like I am whole, when I write.

That and all those voices and characters and places that live inside of my head won't leave me alone most of the time ... Shocked

JoElle,
I feel an incompleteness when I am not writing. After finishing a novel, I take off for three months and at times that gap seems too much. And, I can identify with characters and places singing in your head. Mine do too.

I write because I HAVE to! Not for the money, or fame, or any of the 'normal' reasons. I just HAVE to!!!!

Hubby wants me to finish books for the money and success. Yea, right on the success.

I want to just get it out of ME! The more I write, though, the more I fill up and overflow. It never stops! I have lost more good ideas, words, characters, information, and you name it, because I couldn't get it down on paper or in a tape recorder.

I guess that is the creative gene in me. Wonder where I got it from?
