My strong impression from agents is that they don't know what they're looking for...like movie producers. They THINK they do, but really they only know it when they see it.

The only agency I know that publishes a monthly list of what they want to see is Donald Maass.

And you look at it and scratch your head. A book about bike messengers or bike mechanics? Why that, especially? A meerkat fantasy? Duel fireworks makers in old London?

What are these, something pubishers have expressed interest in? Dream dates? Twisteroos on things the competition just sold?

One thing's for sure. I'm not going to be one of the people dashing off a bike mechanic meerkat fireworks novel to be one of the thousand they get in the slush pile next month.

How about a meerkat tale of Pinocchio proportions where the meerkat becomes a real bike mechanic?? Smile

Sort of reminds me of the times when I find myself in front of the open refrigerator door, not really hungry for anything in particular--just there. scratch

I end up eating something I didn't really want, or wanting something I didn't have.

Some sort deep insight in this whole line of thought. Suspect It's been a long week.

Seriously, you know what agents, publishers, and film producers are all looking for...though it mostly doesn't exist?

A guarantee.
