I am shocked. You Johnny Rebs need to spend some time in Northeast Ohio where everybody eats pierogies, sauerkraut balls, gnocchi, kielbasa and city chicken, which is small pieces of pork on a stick and is served with noodles, mashed potatoes and gravy.

That's really weird food, Dick. I don't understand why y'all just can't eat grits at Waffle House like reasonable folks.

Shelagh I don't know what that recipe is meaning to limit people to just 2 or 3 perogies. Heck, that'd be an appetizer.

I miss perogies, which would normally be served along a good chunk of ham or garlic (Polish or Ukranian style) sausage at home. Here all I can find are frozen perogies (which are okay in a pinch) and bloody pepperoni. It's just not the same!! Who's bloody idea was it for pepperoni to take over the world. Sheepers!

I'm going for lunch...I think there's probably 6 frozen perogies in the freezer...

Good Gawd. And people think Southerners are weird.

But just to let you know, my former in-laws were from eastern Ohio and
I never saw such dull, bland, nothing food. They even massacred the
holy of holies--chicken and dumplings. When they handed the plate to
me, I looked at that dry lump sitting on the other side of the plate
from the chicken and wondered what it was. I about fell off the chair
when my mother in law said it was a dumpling. Poor, poor lady. I can't
imagine going through life without even knowing true
dumplings--tender, moist pieces of dough right in the chicken broth.

In Alabama, I was introduced to the type of dumplings you mention, Brenda. They were in a peach cobbler, and I was in heaven! I had never heard of dumplings in pie. Of course, they were not quite the same as done in Chicken and dumplings, but it sure broadened my horizons (and my body!). Gosh, now I am getting hungry--better go get some breakfast in the pan!

Well, Zada, you got me on that one. I've never had dumplings in a pie, but anything with peaches in it has to be wonderful.

All I can say is you folks from Bubba Land don't know what good eatin' really is. I will admit, though, that during my two lengthy stays in Georgia I did discover one thing that was edible: the cornbread sticks at Morrison's cafeterias.
My time in Louisiana was a complete washout.
For the best chicken and dumplings in the world, visit Fred's Diner in Akron, Ohoho. Then go to the New Era Cafe for paprikash topped off with melt-in-your-mouth strudel. Don't miss the saurkraut balls at Dontino's.
Zada, they are saurkraut balls and to the best of my knowledge do not contain saurkraut.
Be careful about one thing while in Akron. Do not park on the devil strip.

You haven't eaten at Fred's Diner lately, Brenda.
I once ate some southern chicken and dumplings and lost two teeth on the dumplings. I will say this, it's one of the few things you folks down there eat without frying.
I did forget one good thing about Louisiana, the 10 cent watermelon.

After hearing about those cathead biscuits I had
to try one. The one I found was delicious and huge ... and I found it
at Starvin Arvin's at a truck stop in Fruita CO.

I had it just as Madhatter recommends hot and slathered in real butter. YUM!!

Is there more than one Starvin' Arvin, Joelle? I have heard of them, but never been to Co.

I knew someone in Az. that made the most wonderful buttermilk biscuits and red eye gravy. She showed me how to make the biscuits several times, and I even wrote it all down. But I never could duplicate the light fluffy texture. Hers were not as large as a cat's head, however.

It's hard to beat homemade breads fresh from the oven!
